Its whole name is Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution. It started in China and was exported by Mao to the southeastern countries, African countries and some Latin America countries. Cultural Revolution is the most understudied subject in US and West about communism, therefore the least known to the regular westerners.
Those ivy woke students resemble red guards who played a major role in Cultural Revolution. Amazingly red guards originated from Chinese elite schools too. Specifically it was founded in Tsinghua University (Chinese MIT where president Xi and his predecessor Hu graduated) and Peking University (Chinese Harvard). Although red guard as an organization was abolished in 1979, its spirit never left until 1989.
