Interesting.
I have to search to get something to pop up on youtube. Or, I have to login, or not delete my cookies after I close my browser.
Well, this is one way to get people to remain inside their little bubbles. God forbid people get shown some videos from outside of their bubble.
I guess I will be going to Youtube a lot less now. Was fun while it lasted.
It's a calculated risk/reward situation. I've been on Google Pixel phones for the last 5 years, I subscribe to YouTube TV, YouTube Premium and YouTube Music. YouTube Music is literally amazing in its ability to find music that I will like. I know this (what Duncan Trussel describes as a mind controlling tracking device) phone and software is the antithesis of the concept of privacy. I know it's listening, and I've often said that it knows me better than my wife does. But I don't care in the short term. Because I didn't choose to live in the midst of the tech revolution, if I had a choice I wouldn't choose this, but the other choices seem like non-choices. And indeed I can't wait to not have a phone. But between now and then, it's the best path to freedom. And freedom is better than privacy, IMO. Oh, money is freedom in the modern world.
Speaking of Duncan Trussel: "Some poor, phoneless fool is probably sitting next to a waterfall somewhere unaware of how angry and afraid he's supposed to be." I'm totally jealous of that fool.
Seems like it would need something to "bounce off" in order to recommend anything: Watch History, recent browsing/searching, etc.
I assumed it was trending stuff...or pay-for-front-page stuff. Occasionally I'd click on one, and down the rabbit hole I'd go. I kind of liked hitting topics outside of what I would normally search for.
And uh, when you had your watch history turned on YouTube was actually keeping you IN your bubble.
I never logged in, and I cleared my cookies, as I do now, which is why their change has affected me. They didn't keep me in any bubble.

When I close my browser, all my cookies and site visit information is deleted. So, when I open up my browser and go to youtube, it is like I am visiting youtube for the first time. They don't know anything about me from my browser. I also never log in to watch videos so they can't track my interests. In the past, that meant some ridiculous video suggestions, but now it means I get no suggestions until I search for something.
I see something like this when I go to youtube now:
