How far behind could he be? He was good enough to get in coming out of high school and has three years left. Make up the credit hours in summer school. As far as where to play him the answer is everywhere. When Rocket was a freshman ND was loaded at running back. After Lou kept pounding on teams inside he played a lot more at RB and by the 4th quarter was killing teams on the edges. Punt return, slot, kickoffs. Playmakers play. Period! If Notre Dame can't go after him because he's not a grad transfer they are a 2nd rate program. Good enough to play in 2023 but not in 2024. Makes no sense.
How much of a "playmaker" is he? Four of his 5 touchdowns on the year were in passing game -- in the 1st game -- and hardly a dynamo on returns with 2 punt returns (long of 19) and 6 KO with long of 24. That hardly screams difference maker to me.
With Love, Price and Payne looking pretty solid already and Williams/Young look very promising (with all 5 being good receivers), what does Edwards add to the RB depth? And we got guys to return kicks as well as what Edwards has shown. Price has more touchdowns on KOs as well as a higher average return than Edwards (even discounting the TD, he averaged 27 per return vs Edwards 21). Ford/Faison will likely be the return guys and I don't see much bigger impact from Edwards worthy of adding another depth guy to a full room are either RM or WR.
So a big "meh" for me!
Obviously Freeman thought he would be a great addition. He's the same type of player as Branch from USC.
I didn't say he wasn't a good player worth recruiting out of high school. The point is we don't need him now. We are three deep at RB with three guys who are just as good as Edwards without even talking about two well- regarded freshmen.
As for Branch, Edwards is nothing like him. Branch is a WR, not a RB. Branch is also a better kick returner being USC's both #1 PR and #1, KOR while Edwards isn't the #1 for either of those roles for Colorado.
