I was inside the Marine Barracks at the Beirut Airport 6-7 days prior to the massive bomb delivered by a truck bomber on an early Sunday morning on 10/23/1983. I was aboard ship in the Red Sea, headed back to Hawaii, when the wire reports started coming in. We lost 241 service personnel. The French lost over 50.
I don't remember Americans immediately asking for President Reagan's head.
A Commander-in-Chief is accountable for any serviceman's death, whether in training or in conflict. That is the deal.
Today's KIAs were brave Americans. They suited up. Their loved ones will never be the same after today.
And there will likely be more KIA's forthcoming.
But, all you want to do is treat their deaths as widgets on your political scoreboard, within hours of their deaths.
