I'm guessing that the clip was there because of Fr. Jenkins...who is undoubtedly influenced by Fr. Ted...who, in the recent book about him ("Hesburgh of Notre Dame...The Church's Public Intellectual", by Todd C. Ream) is reputed by the author to have had very early thoughts about "Climate Change" (i.e. in the mid-1970s), as per this paragraph...(pg. 88)...
-----------------
Driving Hesburgh's concern was not only the fact that some members of the planet had too little to eat, but also that "climatic change has had a disasterous effect on food production." In addition, climate change was taking place in locales where food production was already in a fragile state. For example, "the Sahara Desert is moving south at about 30 miles a year," threatening new regions of the continent in terms of their abilities to feed their respective populations...(ND Archives)...Referencing a now familiar metaphor in Spaceship Earth, Hesburgh claimed that what was needed was a new "world perspective based upon the interdependence of all mankind on this relatively small spacecraft with very finite life resources" ((ND Archives).
_____________
You may not like it, but ND still aspires to have an 'Intellectual' as well as Catholic Faith based influence on world affairs...and as the attached link demonstrates, a lot of other intellectuals on this planet agree on the need for increased attention to Climate Change.
BTW...don't freak out about the reference to the Sahara heading south at 30 miles per year...that's a mis-statement from another source...some current estimates say 30 miles per decade, but most observers agree that the desert region is expanding.
