So, yeah, you misunderstand. What I think they realize is the base is too invested in this, meaning even if they nominated and confirmed someone more conservative it would be seen as a political loss. In other words you could, with principle replace him with another conservative who would likely be a better choice. However, it would be viewed as losing politically. Therefore in the words of our noble majority leader, they are going to plow through.
Principle would be if he was the only chance to appoint a conservative. But there are enough questions about this guy that it isn’t principle, but politics.
