I watched a Ken Burns production about the "West" last night and it was incredible pertinent. At first it seemed like the usual PC apology for the noble savage and the horrific injustice wrecked upon Native Americans by European colonizers... most of which was caused by diseases for which they had no immunity. But then it got into their life styles and it turns out that the various tribes were perpetually invading their neighbors' lands and engaging in constant warfare with one another. Far far worse, however, was an account by a female descendant that when an enemy warrior was brought back to camp the women would bind him, torture him to death, dismember the body, place the parts on stakes and dance around them to celebrate the victory. Holy cow! This is who we humans are... inside... tribal rivals who want to take the lands of others and eliminate them.
Once, we caucasians stole the land that the conquistadores took from the native American residents of the southwest... and now... their descendants want it back... and more.
Sometimes an "emergency" is slow moving... like a frog in a pot of water that is being gradually made hotter and hotter... until it is too late.
