Their experience pokes all sorts of holes in their various dogmas about race and oppression and poverty.
Their explanation for the absurdly disproportionate levels of crime and violence among blacks is that schools and our justice system conspire to lock up as many as possible. And they do this by hanging around majority black neighborhoods, just waiting to pounce for no reason whatsoever. So, you've got a massive conspiracy, and cops who put themselves at greatest risk by spending all their time in the most dangerous neighborhoods. Right. That's why Flint or Gary struggle to maintain police forces. Contrary to this fantasy, honest, law-abiding blacks in these areas beg the cops to be there more often. In truth, cops, EMTs, and other public servants try to stay out of these areas whenever possible. There was a great chronicle of this almost twenty years ago, written by a sociologist who spent years shadowing a Chicago street gang. The gang essnetially filled some of these roles as "cops" and EMTs, mostly because they didn't want the cops to start coming into the projects because it might interfere with their drug trade. All of these delusional beliefs originate with academics, most of whom have no clue whatsoever what happens on the ground in our cities.
