There are bills in place or in the process of flying through our deeply conservative state legislatures that will likely make the following automatically follow the June/July decision to overturn Roe:
- Statewide ban on the procedure;
- criminalization of both the practitioner and the woman;
- criminalization of crossing state line for the purposes of abortion;
- de facto deputization of all citizens, Texas-style, to watch for any of violations. Bounties for catching violators.
There are also proposed bills to arrest uber drivers who help drive a woman to another state to have an abortion and the possibility of swearing out warrants for people who have had or performed abortions in other states. The last one seems too crazy to me to pass.
But the idea that every hick in this state is going to be on the lookout for abortion trips sure is comforting, ain't it? Never mind that the nearest clinic will be more than 700 miles away.
Every red state is going to do this.
And then, of course, the national ban - and similar national laws - will come when the GOP gains control of the congress & white house.
And then? IUDs, IVFs, plan B (of course!) and all sorts of other great things!
This ruling is going to upend this country. Hope you zygote lovers are happy.
