who went freely chose to be there...
As far as the much larger issue of schools teaching Sex and Sexuality...I recently spoke with a long time neighbor and friend who served on the local school board for 12 years and was elected President 3 times...this goes back a few decades, but even then, Sex Education was a focus area...for the board and every Principal. No program, lesson plan was developed and implemented without parental participation, together with expert consultation and training for teachers...in every grade.
For every class, parents had the right, if they so chose, to not have their child participate...but at no time was there a call by the local community for the cessation of these programs and the numbers of non-participants were very small...btw, this School District was and still is in the top-5 in all of CA...
My friend noted that as a board member, each year he would attend a week long meeting to go over all issues old and new that everyone needed to be well versed in, and of course, Sex Education was one of them. To be sure, not all districts embraced 'Comprehensive Sex Education' and some refused to participate...however, there is no evidence...certainly not from our own kids' experiences...that there was any harm of any kind that resulted from their elementary schooling in a district that did embrace it.
While I don't have data for teen pregnancies and STD's in our area, I do for the European countries you no doubt heard me speak of..."Comprehensive Sex Ed" works for all grades...the results are dramatically better than here in the U.S. and other countries...especially those who don't trust their teachers and refuse any outside education..(e.g. "Abstinence Only")
As the attached link shows, this issue is EXTREMELY emotional...but IMO "Education" when properly constructed and delivered, out performs "Ignorance" every time...that way, when kids encounter false or misleading information...which you know they will from all sorts of sources...they'll know what the RIGHT ANSWERS are and be prepared for it...thus they'll act in ways that protect themselves from harm...that, in my mind, is what this is all about.
