President Biden has been an amazingly consequential President. His list of achievements over his first two years is remarkable, especially the legislation that he has navigated across the finish line.
However, his messaging and communication has often suffered, reflected in the job approval polls.
The State of the Union is the best I have seen him — strong, engaging, vibrant, and in command. Very much himself.
Yet, I agree with James Carville. “Age” is not something that just goes away. It is not an issue in which a politician can pivot left, pivot to the middle, pivot to the right. Biden’s age will loom and will be a decisive factor with too many voters.
If Trump is the GOP candidate in 2024, he is damaged. The Democrats do not need Biden to beat Trump. Trump will beat himself.
If the GOP nominates DeSantis or Youngkin or anyone in their 40s or 50s or 60s, Biden’s age, by itself, will make it very difficult to hold the office.
