This all stems from the elimination of meritocracy. It is esp important in professions, but needed

This all began with the change in grading scales in grade schools from A,B,C,D,F to an assessment based on the child's abilities as perceived by the teacher.
We also saw the "trophy for everyone" in kids competitive activities.

The solution is meritocracy, but as you noted, there is a huge vacuum in the Millenials...I have noticed the same thing that your relative has.
