You know, the current Sec. Of Defense was a platoon leader as well. Most officers start there. You could read further than their 1st assignment.

(Side note: My personal favorite for "unqualified" was the music major who Biden appointed as his chief economic advisor. Classic moment when he couldn't explain why the government borrowed money when it could just print money. Google it...it was an epically moronic moment.)
