After Trump was announced as the 47th president of the United States last week, an exit poll which surveyed voters across 10 key states went viral on social media, particularly among Latino voters, for its breakdown of voters by race and gender.
The poll conducted by NBC revealed that 55% of the Latino men that voted, voted for Trump. Many were confused by Latinos’ high turnout for Trump, not only because Trump has platformed comedians which spewed hateful jokes towards the Latino community and has based much of his platform on his abhorrence towards Latinos, but because Latinos historically vote Democrat–and not by low margins.
Members from the Latino community know that this issue is more complex than the media is making out to be.
“I think there’s this misconception that Latinos are super progressive,” KU student Annalia Escalante, who voted for Harris, said. “We’re actually very traditional and conservative especially because catholicism is deeply engrained in our culture.”
Catholicism, machismo and colorism were the three biggest factors which Latinos at the University of Kansas cited for understanding Latinos’ high turnout for Trump.
“It’s machismo. Men feel intimidated when a woman is smarter than them,” KU student Vianney Villasenor, who voted for Harris, said. “Men do not want women to have that much power. It’s simply because she’s a woman and they feel threatened.”
There’s many layers to machismo, its homophobic and sexist overtones being the primary characteristics of this mindset. Some men in the Latino community grow up believing that they have authority and power over women solely because of their gender.
Machismo and colorism are two mindsets that go unaddressed in the Latino community, giving these plagues more power and giving the Latino community less of an opportunity for progress.

It certainly makes sense...Harris dominated Trump in their only debate...she's much more intelligent than he is...she's demonstrated power and wisdom in her career as a Prosecutor, Attorney General, and Vice President...Trump has nothing but failures (e.g. Bankruptcies, Crimes and COVID)...plus she's much younger, more energetic and a harder worker. Her only problem was being a Black/Indian Woman.
