Our evolutionary legacy involves living in tribes led by CHIEFS who compulsively fought over territory. In terms of the history of life on earth, we descended from the canopy a mere eyeblink ago. Our psyches are still governed by unconscious conflicts and anxieties extant from prehistory. We do what we can to create conscious guardrails to limit violent acting out… but our aggressuve instincts remain buried inside our heads like tectonic plates beneath the earth’s crust. They only need to be triggered to set off a catastrophic quake. The hope is that our increasing technological connectivity can make us sufficiently aware of the potential horror if we yield to our CHIEFS’ most base instincts. Sadly, if we try to be reasonable with the most aggressive CHIEFS… they just run over us. Then we go elevate our own CHIEF.
