Why not $100/hr? or $6/hr?

Generally speaking, I prefer letting the market take care of wages. If a company is willing to pay an amount, and a person is willing to work for that amount, why should the government stop that?

Granted, some people are maximally employed at the current minimum wage levels. But, others could seek out better employment if they are willing to shower and dress semi-professionally. (We have a local Catholic charity that helps people with that if they need help in that regard.) But, increasing minimum wage decreases opportunities by decreasing jobs and by putting financial strain on stores that have those types of jobs. It especially limits teens being able to get jobs.

This is not a big issue for me. Indeed, I'm not aware of a single place near me which employs people at minimum wage. The hiring signs out front always show wages higher than minimum wage. So, sounds like a non-issue to me.

  • GOP:...Trillions for the Wealthiest Americans...but fierce opposition to raising the Minimum Wage... [LINK] - TyroneIrish - 11:54am 8/5/25 (13) [View All]
    • What would you raise it to? [NT] - NedoftheHill - 12:20pm 8/5/25
      • I like Chris' suggestion...maybe throw in more for high cost localities...like NYC or the SF/BA [LINK] - TyroneIrish - 3:17pm 8/5/25
        • So, what would you raise it to? Haven't thought about it before now? [NT] - NedoftheHill - 5:00pm 8/5/25
          • I just told you and gave you additional information...what's your response?..or are you absolved - TyroneIrish - 5:17pm 8/5/25
            • What amount did you say? [NT] - NedoftheHill - 6:05pm 8/5/25
              • LOL...here's the article's title.."Here’s what minimum wage would be if it kept up with inflation".. - TyroneIrish - 6:23pm 8/5/25
                • Interesting that you don't want to say an amount. The article doesn't answer either. - NedoftheHill - 7:25pm 8/5/25
                  • As the article says, if the Federal Minimum Wage kept up with inflation it would be $12.84 now… - TyroneIrish - 7:59pm 8/5/25
                    • So YOU want a minimum wage of $12.84? The article didn't advocate for that, and you wouldn't answer. - NedoftheHill - 10:02pm 8/5/25
                      • Sounds like a good number to start with...what's your offer? ;-) [NT] - TyroneIrish - 10:40pm 8/5/25
                        • Why not $100/hr? or $6/hr? - NedoftheHill - 11:50am 8/6/25
      • Why not just peg it to inflation [NT] - Chris94 - 1:13pm 8/5/25
        • You need a baseline amount to "peg to inflation". [NT] - iairishcheeks - 4:55pm 8/5/25
