The main reason for College Costs increasing so much is that States and the Federal Government have Cut Back on their funding for Colleges...who then have to "Market" themselves (in competition with other Colleges) to attract students...thus, we have gorgeous Student Unions, Dorms, Million Dollar FB coaches (Faculty??), etc.
Closer to home, no one I knew at ND complained about living in Sorin, Dillon, or Lyons Halls...or watching B-Ball in the Fieldhouse, then hanging out at the Huddle. While improvements are necessary and beneficial, we shouldn't have to make higher education a full-on Business...since the goal is nothing other than raising the quality and productivity of this country. Note that in other countries...e.g. Ireland...if you qualify for College (i.e. Leaving Exam), your tuition is payed for. That's the 'Intelligent Way' to go.
