If/when the Dems retake power, there will be tremendous pressure from the left to do what Trump did. To escalate, because the norms have been shattered. They will try to justify it by pointing to the shit Trump pulled, and say the same crap you guys are saying now.

I will oppose it. But unless the leadership is strong, it will happen.

This notion of "deterrence" totally misunderstands American politics. That is just not how it works.
