About a third of lifetime total healthcare spending is the last few years of life. Obama death panel

The U.S. is rather unusual in the amount we will spend at the end of life on people. Europe and Canada ration care as a means to keep spending down too.

Similar situation with premature births. In a lot of other countries they will let the kids die instead of spending $250K to keep them alive.

Bottom line is one of the best ways to keep total spending down is to provide less end of life care.
