The amount and intensity of pure vituperative attacks that have recently been unleashed in the media and social media against our University is both alarming and instructive.

Folks are literally crawling from under rocks (the Big 12 Commissioner?) to rant against the Irish.

This rage was obviously repressed (and consciously denied) for quite some time... but was just waiting for a trigger to explode.

Its genesis is derived from only single fact of life: Notre Dame's INDEPENDENCE.

Human beings strive from birth to separate from their mothers and individuate as unique beings.

We all fail to some degree... and some compensate by exhibiting pseudo-independence while others cling to surrogate moms for life.

College football conferences play this maternal role for almost every institution, which becomes dependent for all its needs on being a member.

Nonetheless... they yearn to be free and ENVY any team that can stand on its own.

So... get used to being the object of hate by everyone who is tethered to a conference.

It's just human nature.

And by the way... maternal dependence impacts political agendas as well.
