We used to be a country where people of rival parties got along and thought the idea of labeling someone good or bad based upon party allegiance was ridiculous. Now, since fewer and fewer people are religious in the traditional sense, they gravitate to the secular religion of uber-partisanship, and anyone outside their religion is evil. Of course, politics and human beings cannot replace an actual deity that is beyond our complete comprehension, so it is totally unsurprising that these "politics as religion" adherents are almost universally miserable. Their foundation isn't even built on sand.
