After several days of rioting, the ROTC building had been burned to the ground by arsonists among the rioters.
The rioters nonetheless assumed the Guard had no ammo, or blanks (per interviews afterward), so they advanced on the troops who initially retreated (and who had been protecting the ROTC building before) but felt cornered when the protestors advanced too quickly. The very definition of FAFO.
I was surprised when I did a little reading about that event. There were a lot of bad facts which resulted in emboldened rioters and spooked 18 year old soldiers who were not MPs. Not a good mix at all.
