High school Civics. There's a reason we are a republic and not a democracy.

A democracy is a system where the people hold power THROUGH MAJORITY RULE... while a republic is a representative system where laws and a constitution protect individual and minority rights (like those of smaller or more rural States).

de Tocqueville warned us about the tyranny of the majority... and he wasn't even thinking about Tammany Hall. type politics, a proud Democrat party tradition still flourishing to this day.
