You make a good point.
If the people of Iran don't step up, we may be, and probably should be, in this for the long haul.
We won't though. An entire political party in the United States want to just trust Iran's leadership not to build nukes. So, at some point, Iran will. If we could show a little backbone for multiple consecutive administrations of both parties, Iran might think twice. For now, they are just hoping for Democrat electoral victories (and therefore time to build a nuke, and maybe even some cash from us to them to help out their autocratic regime).
