The SAVE Act requires documentary proof of US citizenship to register to vote.
If a state registers voters without providing proof of citizenship, then such proof must be provided when the voter is attempting to vote in any Federal election
Special processes are set forth when documents are in error, or the prospective voter otherwise cannot provide documentation. Provisional ballots may be submitted. No fees may be charged for obtaining documents from the government.
If it is determined that a non-citizen attempts to register to vote, removal proceedings are possible. Non-citizens shall be removed from the voter rolls of eligible voters. Criminal penalties may apply to a person assisting non-citizens in registering to vote.
