As someone who is fallen away I see Pope Leo as a theocratic politician simply seeking to increase his POWER.
As a former believer, however, I see him as willingly blind to the militant history of the Catholic religion.
I suppose he sees most of his predecessors as anti-Christian.
At least he is not taking the stance that his view is a matter of faith and morals.
Personally, I always viewed religion as a human coping mechanism for dealing with personal mortality.
The life of Jesus was about "individual" salvation.
