Federal gas tax is only 18 cents a gallon. But it is part of a rather heroic international effort to save the global economy by keeping oil prices as low as possible: every strategic reserve has been opened, and most are starting to run dry; China has cut imports, decreasing demand pressure (not to help the USA, but because a global recession is not in their interest).

These are all only temporary fixes. Major shortages are coming.
