Reza Aslan's book "No god, but God"...it provides a comprehensive account of how the religion started and evolved...and, btw, it is by no means 'monolithic'...

Aslan's book goes into a lot of detail explaining Muhammad's early days, and why he had to flee from Mecca to Medina...the subject of your video clip.
