Politicians in general choose the profession to compensated for severe inner conflicts and anxieties and we elect ones who best reflect our own difficult "issues."

Trump represents a reaction to what the Dems are "offering" and their agenda is a reaction to his being a supreme asshole,

The fact that I feel he is the worst of the lot suggests to me that the nation is collectively messed up.
