As much as I enjoy his perspectives, IMO he focuses more on Symptoms, than Root Causes...which aren't necessarily Government or Party related. Also, he left out some important comparisons, while focusing solely on CA...for instance (forgive the edits as I bring in links to help explain)...
>Increase in Public Employees...actually, CA sits near the middle among all states in the percentage of Public Employees per 100,000 residents (#19)...lower than Michigan (#6), or FLA (#3)...so that shouldn't be a factor in his assessment of Governance...NB:...his chart shows step function increases after a) the Great Recession, and b) the COVID-19 pandemic...not surprising, given all the public assistance needed.

>Demise of L.A.'s Hollywood Industry...Fareed leaves out the Root Cause impact of newer technology on the traditional Movie Industry...i.e. Streaming...Digital Graphics...AI, and the effects on everyone from Screen Actors, Screen Writers and Set Designers, to name a few. This has very little, if anything, to do with "Governance" by L.A. public officials...whatever the party.
>Emigration from CA...even FLA and TX are seeing significant outflows of their Lower and Middle Income residents due to extremely high Insurance costs (if available at all, outside of the state coffers) and Climate Change impacts (Flooding, Wind Damage, etc.)

There are other root causes for such disruptions/challenges in many states...and I'll add another one...our exceedingly high and expanding 'Wealth Gap'...sometimes referred to as the "K-Shaped Economy".
I will add one "Pony" for CA however...at least the state is acknowledging the K-Economy and taking steps to deal iwth it, while other states refuse to see the obvious imbalance and its effect on the large majority of their citizens.
