I worked with an Israeli citizen, and we talked about this kind of stuff all the time. He told me that the foreign policy of Israel is not highly debated or contested in their elections, and that when control of the government changes hands, foreign policy is not radically changed. They know they face an ongoing existential threat, and most of the major parties support an aggressive defense.
When it comes to domestic issues, even Netanyahu defends the most liberal government in the Middle East. It is odd that Democrats hate Israel, when Israel is the most liberal nation over there. Just for example, it is one of the few countries in the ME where homosexuality is not prohibited, and Israel has a vibrant gay community. One of my bosses was gay, and Israel would be the only country he would go to in the Middle East.
And yet the gays and Democrats in the US support Palestine, where gays would be killed, and most of the principles Democrats used to hold dear would be set aside in favor of an Islamic theocracy. Mostly this is because the Left is quite uninformed on this issue and views global issues through the lens of internal US politics. But, many on the Left do hate all the Jews in Israel, not just "Netanyahu and his government."
