The idea or the model of melting pot has been here for long long time. When I came to America I was still educated by the idea of melting pot. Reagan used it in his speeches. H Bush used it too. The person who used it the best, guess who? It is Clinton. He called the America world’s greatest melting pot.

But starting from this century, specifically from Obama era, the left didn’t like melting pot anymore. Actually they against it. In their political discourse the melting pot was replaced by salad bowl or even potluck.

So, ultimately it is not anti- immigration issue. Please don’t call the right anti immigration ( of course extreme groups exist in both sides). This is about what the country should be with immigration. The right wants to use immigration to make America a melting pot like we did in last 200 years which means immigration is slow, harmonious and assimilation-based, i.e. different elements melting together.

The left wants to use immigration to change this country to a salad bowl. Everyone in the bowl co-exists with their own heritage. In this salad bowl, tomatoes, lettuce, onions, cucumbers….all are equal. This is called Multiculturalism. Right now they think too much tomatoes and too less cucumbers in this salad bowl. So they want a fast mass immigration of cucumbers.

Melting pot vs salad bowl is real issue. This is a big deal. Immigration is just a tool.

Please answer, do you want America to be a melting pot or a salad bowl?
