Hmmmkay.
Biden was already taking heat for the speed of the collapse of Afghanistan in July. That's why we got those wonderful quotes about, "This won't be Saigon!", "Over the horizon!", etc etc. This heat was coming domestically as well as from international partners like the UK and Germany who were aghast at the panicked exit from our main airbase. Joe thought a few news cycles of "Look how well these Afghan soldiers are fighting!" would take the wind out of the sails of all the naysayers. He even offered the bribe of "close air support until 8/31, and maybe beyond if you play your cards right, Ghani." Joe was not interested in hearing about Pakistan coordinating with the Taliban. "No more negative waves, Moriarty!"
All Joe cared about was the perception that this thing wasn't collapsing faster than he had planned. He didn't care whether Afghanistan collapsed, as long as it happened after he was done with it.
