In my experience, commercial relevance is usually in inverse proportion to intellectual relevance. With few exceptions, the best-selling novelists are among the worst writers. What's the most popular movie ever? Titanic. What song has grossed the most revenue for Aerosmith? "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing." And what news station will never, ever find itself on the shortlist of any journalism prizes? Fox News.
Fox News caters to the lowest common denominator. Their hosts are right-wing polemics that hide behind a total bullshit veil of "fairness" that makes we want to puke. They're not fair. They're not intelligent. They know their audience, and they know the important thing is not to be right or wrong, but to just be the loudest person in the room.
