vaccines...we would not be having this discussion if COVID-19 caused only a runny nose...we wouldn't need a vaccine for that. As should be painfully obvious by now, 5.7 million people worldwide have died from COVID-19. So long as the vast majority of ICU cases (typically on the order of 98%) and deaths are occurring among the 'un-vaccinated', the vaccines are doing their most important job.
When the vaccines were first introduced vs. the original "Wild Type" version of COVID-19, they were extremely effective at reducing transmission (on the order of 95%), however, as viral pathogens are want to do, it mutated to more transmissible variants (e.g. Delta and now Omicron) which has caused the vaccines to be less effective against transmission...but not 'zero'...and thankfully, not less effective thus far in keeping people out of ICUs and mortuaries.
The Lancet report is a valuable addition to our understanding of what's happening with COVID-19...and an excellent warning to all those who are currently un-vaccinated...the virus hasn't lost it's "punch", and now there are many more potential "assailants" they need to worry about.
