He said that if someone comes in and presents themselves as an asylum seeker at the border checkpoints, they are processed and released pending a later scheduled hearing date. No separation of families. (This was prior to the executive order.)
The only people detained are those who sneak past the border checkpoints. They do not claim asylum or refugee status at the border. They only claim asylum (if at all) when they are caught. In those cases, the children are separated from their "adult sponsors" (who could be parents, but who could merely be the children's slave owners or pimps...often no way for ICE to tell).
