One of the biggest issues is early identification children - as infants. Most parents I know naturally would dress their children to an established code of blue for boys, pink for girls - boys play with trucks, girls play with dolls. However with the population growing the way it is, the number of those misidentified is growing putting great strain on the children who are misidentified. As they become older, there's big pushback. The established norm biologically is what we know, male with female but the issues are now exaggerated from when our grandparents and great grandparents were in control; those community rules remain the same putting great strain on the now growing queer folk. Now all our social norms are severely challenged and with social media and media in general, the apple cart has been tipped and won't be upright for a long time.
Long ago novelists and song writers were sending out code to readers spelling out their queer lives and no one in the straight community noticed or didn't get it. That's all changed.
My favorite singer (friend) sings a great Johnny Mercer tune of the perils of being a gay man hiding his identity.
The great American writer John Cheever too.
