a willing participant. I think that equates to trying to "influence" the election by just about anything you do. Give me a break. Of course the idea that he may have had an affair with a willing participant may have hurt him with the evangelicals(not that anyone as pure as Martin Luther KIng would have engaged in extra marital affairs, whoops) but anything you do is trying to win over the undecided people or strengthen your base. What the hell is the big deal if indeed that was the idea behind it, or just a personal matter of trying to keep it from his wife for example.
