I hope the powers that be don't think all they need is another high profile coach to turn this around.
The most important man at United now is Nicky Butt. As head of the Youth Academy he's the guy that is going to lead United back to glory.
The great United teams of the 90s and 2000s relied on the youth academy grads like Beckham, the Nevilles, Butt, Giggs and Scholes to be the homegrown core of the greatest team in Europe. From that core they added pieces like Cantona, Andy Cole, Ronaldo, van Nistelrooy and Rooney to round out their championship squads. You need the core.
Fergie got a bit drunk on the imports near the end and the youth academy suffered. Butt took over the youth academy in 2016. As a former grad and a player on those great great senior teams over a decade or so, he knows the value of a premier academy. From all indications he's done a great job recruiting and rebuilding the academy but those players are 2-4 years away from making the senior team. Only once they are promoted and the core of the team consists of United boys will the team return to greatness. City and Liverpool have great academies and it's not surprising they are top of the table now. United will return to the top only with the youth academy restored. I think they'll get there.
