It's not like Trump was ordering the use of nuclear weapons in Syria. That would warrant a very public resignation.
Trump was deciding that a mission was complete (at least for the time being...I happen to think this war will last 100 years, but we will need breaks). Mattis should have saluted and executed, even if he disagreed...and he should have executed without reservation, to make what he thought was a bad decision into the best possible decision given the circumstances. Trump's decision was well within the discretion of the commander in chief, and it was shameful for Mattis to pretend that his decision is not within normal bounds.
