The Germans will open Nord Stream 2 pipe line because they desperately need the gas and the rest of the Euros will line up behind Germany because they also need the gas. At some point the Russians will start playing games with delivery, the Euros will start squealing and grunting like stuck hogs and the "coalition partners," necessary to sustain the plan will deteriorate. The plan will turn into an economic drain on the US and we will loose any possibility of Russia's help with Iran, Syria, et al.
BTW, do you remember learning in grade/middle school about the Monroe Doctrine? Well just suppose China forms a pact with Canada and Mexico; well we wouldn't stand for it, we'd go ballistic. Well, that is exactly what I mean when I say that Russia considers Ukraine to be of vital strategic interest, it doesn't want any aspect of Nato on its border and to prevent that, Russia will tolerate more pain than we can imagine. Helping an insurgency in Ukraine is not a vital strategic interest to us and considering the above, my sense is that once the gas starts flowing, such a plan will diminish and collapse over time and Russia will still be there.
Perhaps a better plan would be to send turbine blades to the Euros for their wind-turbines.
