There are very smart people who post on this board and the last thing we want to do is to discourage legitimate discourse. I know I lean a lot just reading what you folks put up here every day, and I appreciate the opportunity to participate. That said, posts that are no more than insults and name-calling make the board unreadable. Those are the strings that get locked, or even deleted if they're really tedious or ugly. If the insults go too far I generally counsel people with board mails. Most of the time that works, at least for a while, but there are occasions where someone refuses a request to stop being a dick. That's when I use a suspension. The base suspension is 48 hours, but repeat offenders can get more. Really ugly insults also justify longer suspensions.

All that said --some of you are really good at hurling insults in a witty fashion. I admit it's a subjective standard, but if you make me laugh I sometimes (usually?) let it go.
