I've been the victim of that "situational good wine" syndrome, and am careful recommending wines because of it. I actually had this three totally different times (party, family dinner, and just hanging out). It was consistent over those three.
You probably wouldn't have needed to tell me that about Nickel & Nickel for me to suspect that something pretty spectacular was in that bottle.
Another pro tip: the Markham 1789 (or is it 1879?) red blend is also a very nice bottle in the 20-25 range. Yes- I've had it several times. Caymus Conundrum (red) sucks, btw.
