compromised....
....because you are going to be exposed anyways, the virus is so infectious and lives on surfaces for long enough that it is just placebo,
because the home masks aren't filtered even close to the level to prevent the virus from going through them (yes it would potentially avoid an even a bigger exposure of water droplets with a sneeze or cough, but those are symptomatic people that are not being talked about here - they should wear a mask and shouldn't be out at all by the way), because people reuse their masks, they breath and cough and sneeze into them and then retouch them to take them off which can undo any hand washing they had previously done. they stick them in their pockets and then wash the mask but put their hands back in said pockets - in summary, they lack training in sterile technique, they aren't wearing single use sterile gloves (and would need to know how to remove them without contaminating themselves aslo), and face masks to cover the eyes all of which would actually be required to make a real effort.
And because we already achieved the goal of flattening the curve, and the healthcare systems are not at risk in most areas of being overwhelmed anymore, and we need to start building herd immunity which begins to be significant at about 70% of the population exposed as I recall while the Stanfordand USC studies showed that in Cali, the % of those testing positive was only at 20% so far.
In reality, in many lower hit areas, now is probaby as good time as any to be exposed with many beds available for the very few healthy people who get sick), and we even appear to have a good drug for treating very ill patients which Gilead is about to start mass producing.
And because the massive destruction to our economy, our way of life, and even the inhibition of other medical problem treatments is going to cause more loss of life, than this virus which appears to kill just 1/1000 low risk people.
I will grant that phasing out of lockdown can be coordinated with widespread availability of remdesivir, but otherwise, we need to isolate the at risk and high risk areas while opening up the low risk areas to take advantage of the benefits of both strategies (avoidance for the at riskand herd immunity). The herd immunity will further help the high risk with avoidance since the virus will be less prevalent when most people are immune and don't carry active disease.
It is ironic that you see not wearing a mask (which the CDC has not recommended in asymptomatic, low risk people in areas where a crowd doesn't preclude social distancing) is a badge of honor for the right, because continuing the shutdown beyond what is reasonable and with unnecessary restrictions appears to be a badge of honor for the Left to us.
