And I have in a big school and at smaller schools. You are simply incorrect. I myself have never been a big flag guy and I think we've got the worst national anthem. I would characterize it more as, "Do you appreciate where you live/were born?"
Frank is also incorrect in assuming that young people in general are not socialized to honor the flag and the anthem. It's quite the opposite among the lower economic strata. One would expect the people with less to be the most critical of their own countries, and for those with the most to be the most appreciateive, but that usually isn't the case. We can speculate. I myself don't think it's much more complicated than recognizing that the more you have, the less you tend to appreciate it and that which allows you to have this plenty. It's completely unsurprising that the heart of our new cultural revolution is led by those who do not come from the working class, thus, that odd phenomenon of Ivy League and exclusive private college students leading the charge on white privilege and America: The Stain on Humanity, rather than the trade school kids.
