Bob Feller, who struck out 17 in 1936 at the age of 17.
A true child prodigy, at the age of 17, he was on the cover of Time magazine. Following his debut season, he returned to Iowa for his senior year of high school.
WWII veteran who missed nearly four full seasons. At the height of his fame and prowess, he enlisted in the Navy the day after Pearl Harbor - the first MLB player to do so following the attack.
He is my personal hero. I met him a couple of times at Indians spring training in AZ, and he posed for photos w/ myself and my kids. He was always eager to chat.
