So, I figured, why not buy a few more that he liked. I look at each region, and type, and then I see if he liked any there as a starting point...I have to start somewhere. Otherwise, I'm just picking at random.
During the initial Covid shutdown, I bought an Italian sampler and a French sampler, 6 bottles each, picked by the local store and walked out to my car. Those wines were all over the place. I found some I liked...found some that were drinkable but not great...found one I absolutely despised...kind of hard to believe one was so bad, when the others were so good.
Seems like there is a little more complexity in the wines of France. I was intimidated by it initially, but I have grown to like their wines, and I'm starting to understand a little about the different regions. US wines seem to be mostly single grape...only blend when they have to, and maybe don't do it even when they should??? Don't know if that is accurate or fair, but blending seems more customary in France, which allows them to show a little more creativity, and possibly take off some of the rough edges...but that makes it more complex, as well...and interesting. There is a lot to learn.
