There are millions and millions who still cannot find employment at any rate of pay. They will miss rent and mortgage payments and spend a lot less on essentials and their landlords and loaners and local stores will suffer severe losses. This will cascade thru the entire economy and probably lead to social disorder. Congress could prevent this simply by extending the federal unemployment benefits even at a somewhat reduced rate. Instead, each side is locked into insisting on issues having little or even absolutely nothing to do with the central matter of unemployment. It's as if when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor the two parties demanded all kinds of irrelevant pork be added to the Declaration of War.
