Really appreciate your sharing those concerns...seriously. As Curly mentioned, there are other opinions and perspectives that need to be "dialogued", and I'll join in later...but on your second point "attacking and undermining the one industry that has given us energy independence", I'd like to refer you to an earlier thread I offered entitled "Numbers, not Adjectives" in which I provided a link to a book that deals with 'Energy Strategy' (linked again for convenience).
In his introduction, he gives three thoughts that motivated him to write the book...a) There are credible concerns that oil reserves are not keeping up with consumption (i.e. British Petroleum (2014) stated their belief that global oil reserves would last ~53 years with expected consumption levels (now pegged by other sources as 47 years)...b) foreign sources of oil (of which we still import/rely) cannot always be counted on (I lived through the 1973 OPEC Embargo)...c) A sudden surge of CO2, when added to that naturally released by our current 'Milankovich Cycle' could indeed be cause for concern.
If you'd like, let's dialogue more on this.
