the use of masks, distancing, etc., when a vaccine was on the horizon. The purpose of my comment was to make clear that just having a highly effective medication means nothing if a significant majority of the population doesn't use it. Again, my ID Doc relative pointed out that medical professionals are worried that too many Americans won't "sign up"...turns out that the original poster is vocally against getting the vaccine.
If we fall short of the 60-70% threshold, we'll be stuck in 'Pandemic Land' for the foreseeable future, instead of getting our economy and social lives back to normal.
BTW, the intent of using "R0" was to show that even with a highly infectious disease like Measles (R0 = ~12-18), with a very good vaccine (99%) and widespread usage, we can indeed get back to normal...just trying to be encouraging.
Finallly, the vaccine won't be available to the general public for several months and meanwhile it is now raging through the midwest, among other sectors, and causing hospitals to be literally overrun...squeezing out care for heart attacks, cancer and bowel obstructions, while doctors and nurses work to exhaustion and COVID patients die in hallways. We need to stay focused and vigilant wrt masks, hand washing, distancing, etc.. Depending on the success of the vaccination program, we just might have to continue with masking, et al, until testing and contact tracing show that the "All Clear" signal can be raised.
Make any sense to you?
P.S. How did you like the Masters? (I'm a golf lover...marshaled for the U.S. Open)
